The formulator must distinguish mucilage from sweetness, leaf hairs from volatile oils, nourishing traditions from stimulant effects, and flavor support from safety liabilities.
Marshmallow Root — Althaea officinalis
Family: Malvaceae. Part used: root. Marshmallow root is rich in water-loving polysaccharides commonly discussed as mucilage. When hydrated, these compounds contribute a slippery, coating mouthfeel that makes marshmallow a classic demulcent material in traditional herbal practice.
The preparation lesson is unusually important: “root” does not automatically mean “boil hard.” If the objective is a mucilage-rich preparation, cool or room-temperature maceration is commonly used in herbal practice, and a formulator can compare it with hot infusion to observe differences in texture. Extraction strategy follows the desired constituent class.
Formulation role: marshmallow can soften dryness, round sharp acidity, change mouthfeel, and provide a gentle structural base. Its flavor is mild, so stronger aromatics can easily cover it. Substantial or repeated glycyrrhizin exposure can promote sodium retention, potassium loss, edema, and increased blood pressure. Hypertension, cardiovascular or kidney disease, low-potassium risk, pregnancy, and relevant medications can change suitability. DGL is a different preparation and should not be treated as identical to ordinary licorice root.

Course 4 keeps those statements in the correct category: traditional herbal use. They do not establish that mullein tea treats pneumonia, asthma, COPD, or another diagnosed respiratory disease.
Preparation: mullein tea should be filtered carefully through fine material because tiny leaf hairs can remain suspended and irritate the mouth or throat. This is a perfect example of the Four Tests from Course 3: a formula can have a plausible purpose and coherent herb selection yet fail Practicality if the finished cup is poorly filtered.
Sensory role: mullein leaf is generally mild, green, and slightly earthy. It rarely dominates flavor, which makes it easy to pair, but “easy to pair” is not a reason to include it without a defined role.

Oatstraw appears in Western herbal traditions as a nourishing/restorative herb, often in long infusions. Its flavor is mild, grassy, hay-like, and unobtrusive. It can create body without pushing a formula strongly toward sweetness, pungency, or tartness.
Minerals and other water-soluble components are often part of the rationale for longer aqueous preparations, but the student should avoid simplistic claims that one cup “replaces minerals” or treats deficiency. Safety: oat allergy is relevant; gluten contamination/cross-contact matters for people who must strictly avoid gluten even though oats themselves are botanically distinct from wheat, barley, and rye.
Peppermint — Mentha × piperita
Family: Lamiaceae. Part used: leaf/aerial parts. Peppermint is a hybrid mint with a strong volatile-oil profile. Menthol and menthone are major constituent concepts and help explain its cooling aroma and sensation.
